Beforehand, Liverpool and Real Madrid had met only three times with Liverpool winning all three and keeping out goals in all three occasions, not even the loyal Liverpool fans were expecting it to go the same way again, with Liverpool in horrible form this season.
Here is what we learnt:
Liverpool
- Balotelli is a good striker, but he is no Suarez; Suarez used to make penetrating runs for Liverpool, try to recover the ball or even set up an attack, whereas Balotelli just jogs and waits till he is marked then call for passes and just stays up field!
- Liverpool have a very bright start at anfield; If you play Liverpool at Anfield, for the first 15 minutes, expect the worst, they attack with full throttle
- Liverpool need someone who will put away all the decent chances they get; as I said earlier Liverpool start bright at "home" but the don't have that person to put away their chances, with Suarez at Barcelona and Sturrigde injured, should be that man, but he isn't!
- Liverpool have to build their attack around someone; it was Suarez till he left for Barcelona, it should either be balotelli or Sterling, till Sturridge is back.
- Liverpool have a "decent" defence; when facing a team like Madrid, you don't really expect your defence to "hold" up, but Liverpools defence can be a lot better.
Real Madrid
- Don't give any of their midfielders space; if you give Isco space, he'll run at your defence, give James space, he'll do the same and even set somsomeone up as a bonus, give kroos space, and he'll shoot, give Modric space, and he'll pass.
- Real Madrid's defence doesn't like through balls; Liverpool proved that, but couldn't make the right pass or shot.
- Only the "right" defender can mark Ronaldo; he's a menace, and Dani Alves can testify, you need a "Ronaldo" to mark "Ronaldo"
- Don't mark Ronaldo alone; don't make that mistake, you will regret it, they have strikers or even midfielders that will punish you.
